Why do dates differ across calendars?

Most Western countries use the Solar-based Gregorian calendar, which aligns with Earth's orbit around the Sun (365.24 days). However, the Islamic Hijri calendar is Lunar-based (354 days), following the Moon's phaseseach month begins with a new moon. The Nepali Vikram Sambat is Lunisolar, similar to the Hindu calendar, combining solar year with lunar months. This is why a single Gregorian date results in different months and days across various global systems. For example, while Gregorian 2024 is in the 21st century, Hijri dates in the same period show different years (1445-1446), and Nepali BS years (2080-2081) are approximately 56-57 years ahead.

Accuracy of Bikram Sambat Conversion

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Nepali calendar (BS) is based on Hindu tradition and solar movements. Months vary from 29 to 32 days. Our tool uses the latest official calendar data to ensure that conversions for visas, birthdays, and government documents are 100% accurate.

Is the Nepali year always 57 years ahead?

Not exactly. From mid-April to December, the difference is 57 years. From January to mid-April, the difference is 56 years. Our calculator handles this "overlap" automatically so you don't have to.
